Students reflect on the challenges facing our world today and create engineering visions for life on Earth in 25-50 years. In group projects they will flesh out their engineering vision for a “better world”. In addition to working on an issue from a particular field (see below), the students will also develop:
- Awareness
- Sustainability
- Entrepreneurship
- Intercultural competencies
- Industry and society
- Multidisciplinary
- Innovation
The engineer of the future must be able to express his knowledge in a way that is accessible to the general population. Today, the population lacks a general understanding of a number of technological advances. Discussions tend to rapidly digress into passionate discourses. The job of an engineer will be more and more to pass on his knowledge to the general population in a way that they can understand. Thus, it is imperative for engineers to be exposed to courses in humanities, social studies, ethics, and philosophy. It is up to them to be able to explain the choices our society makes.

Plan und Lerninhalt:
Main activities
4-day plenary phase with short inspiring lectures (looking into the future, thinking outside the box, philosophical approach) and training in methodology and creative methods (mind mapping, brain storming, role plays); 8-day multiple project groups working on self-chosen topics. Possible kernels for topics could be from the fields:
- Bionics
- Mechatronics
- Nanotechnology
- Smart materials
- Renewable energy
- Optical technologies
- Sports and technology
- Information technologies
- Human - machine interface
- Product Life Cycle Management
- Biomedical and forensic science
- Intelligent e-Maintenance systems
- Purifying, keeping, transporting water
- Revitalization of country side, coal mines, etc.
Expected outputs
Level 1: Conceptual studies, implementation plans, presentations and documentations;
Level 2: Knowledge of working methodology and creative technologies (like brain storming, mind maps, role plays, world cafe);
Level 3: Reflections and evaluations.

In the initial phase of the IP (Day 2-5), the focus will be laid on inspiring visionary lectures on engineering topics of the future to open up students’ minds, sensitize and motivate them for the IP and its topics. These lectures will be complimented by workshops aimed to increase students’ creativity and to encourage them to engage in group work and team building activities. Thus they will be introduced to methods such as brainstorming, mind mapping, role plays, world café, etc and will have the chance to experiment with these methods.
During the main phase of the IP (Day 6-12), students will mainly work autonomously in groups, supervised by their mentors whose role will be to accompany and facilitate their work progress. However, at the end of each day, all the students and staff members will meet in a plenary session to discuss and evaluate progress as well as to address any problems that may arise.
The IP will be wrapped up on its final day (Day 13) by short seminars during which the student groups give their final presentation and a market place style exhibition.
During all these three phases of the IP, the students will be required to reflect and evaluate both their individual as well as their team work results.
